October 20, 201015 yr comment_19031 Petite nouvelle: Speedwell Sprite (1959) Engine 998 cc Based on a Austin Healey Sprite Mk.1 was classified as a marque in its own right by the FIA after homologation in 1960. The car features disc brakes together with engine and chassis improvements and alternative bodywork. The original version was developed by sportcar racer designer John Sprinzel firstly as the Speedwell Sprite named after the Speedwell tuning firm that he had formed and which Graham Hill later was involved. The car was designed by aerodynamicist Frank Costin and built by Williams and Pritchard, leading race car body builders. Shown at the 1960 racing car show as the Sebring Sprite. Seven of the cars contested the 1961 Sebring Endurance race driven by amongst others Briggs Cunningham and Bruce McLaren. Because of interest from enthusiasts and the scarcity of the original cars, Sprite restorer Brian Archer set about producing a replica of the original.
